Lowell is the fifth largest city in Massachusetts, located in Middlesex County. It has a population of about 100,000 people and shares with Cambridge to hold the county seat.

The city is located at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord rivers. The Pawtucket Falls ends where the two rivers meet. The Pawtucket Dam is situated At the top of the falls and is designed to turn the upper Merrimack into a millpond, diverted through Lowell's extensive canal system.

There are eight distinct neighborhoods in Lowell; the Acre, Back Central, Belvidere, Centralville, Downtown, Highlands, Pawtucketville, and South Lowell.
